Field Trip @ Changi City Point

Guess where EMRS went to spend our Valentine’s Day?
The teams started the day by meeting at MacDonald around 10 in the morning. We were split into teams and given some free time to explore the mall to take a look at how different shops did their opening before the first mission of the day. The mall is huge and had lots of nice stores such as Levis, Uniqlo and Cotton On. Changi City Point is different from the other malls as they had a number of outlets which we can’t find in other malls. Also there are unique restaurants such as Table Manners where you cannot find in other shopping malls.

After our adventurous walkabout, we returned to the gathering point and the OICs gave us our first mission. The mission was to find the answers to the different sets of questions in the shortest amount of time. Students were racing all over the place, and the competition was on. However, the rules weren't specified and all of us went to look for the information counter to get the answers. When everyone gathered back with their answers, the OICs check through and announced the winner for the first round! After our morning activities, everyone was released to go for our lunch break.

The OICs split us into groups and brief us for the 1st Round~!

The winning team

After our break, we watched the Lion dance performance at the atrium. It showed us the importance of teamwork. Without the teamwork between the two lion dance performers, the lion dance will not be as successful and exciting. It was really amazing how they were able to jump up from the ground to the pole and jump around from pole to pole. Also, the lion dancers managed to throw several mandarin oranges up to the 2nd floor! After the lion dance performance, we waited for the God of Fortune to come. Once he arrived, he announced that the first 12 people will get a red packet from him! Our enthusiastic EMRS peeps went up to queue to get the red packet!! The God of Fortune then shared with us some information about the different zodiac signs.

After we finished taking our group photos, we were given our second mission.  This was more challenging as students have to search for the places according to riddles given and take pictures with the different places as the background. Also, we were given 20 minutes to complete all the riddles and come back with all the photos taken.  Through this activity, we were able to learn more about the different stores that Changi City Point has and the facilities around the mall.

Tai Quan’s Group at the water playground! The 3 House!

                                             Colin’s Group @ Table Manners

The fun and enjoyable trip not only helped us to understand more about Changi City Point, but also taught us retail skills and the operations of the stores. Before we left the mall, the OICs distributed the prizes accordingly. We were then dismissed after a short debrief given by our OIC and supervisors.

Games Day

After all the hard work for the Chinese New Year event, we get to spend time together and strengthen the bond between members by having a Games Day.

The purpose of Game day is for everyone to have fun and relax. The games that we played this time were charades, Telepathy game, dodge ball, werewolves. Lastly, the most popular game: Captain Ball. Do you know why captain ball is so popular? Just look at the pictures and you will find out! Everyone gets to work together and run around to pass the ball to their team mates to score as many as possible.
We split into 2 teams for Captain Ball and the members compete fiercely over 3 rounds. At the end of the game, team 2 won by a close margin. This game taught us the importance of communication and teamwork, that every member plays a key role.

TQ you got long hands ah!

So, we started off with charades that has three different themes, where the representative in each group has to act out. The three themes were: Funny Actions, Movie and Animals. The team will have to guess as many words as possible in one minute. Each representative spent a lot of effort thinking on the actions to act out for their team members to guess. This helps students to explore their creativity as they need to come up with moves/actions that resemble the word. Students also need to work as a team because mutual understanding is the key factor in winning this game.

For the Second Game we played was Telepathy game. There were 1 set of question and 1 set of answer distributed and each team will have 2 representatives to play this game. They will first put on the headphones with music on, and try to match the answer to the question. The twist to this game is that students cannot hear what the partner is talking about. They were given 1minute to match as many answers as possible. This game is to test the chemistry between the pair of representative. The opposite team made lots of noises so that they would not be able to hear one another during the game. The purpose of this game is basically for students to relax and laugh at each other, where you get to hear students that are usually soft-spoken screaming at the top of their lungs.

The next game was Dodge Ball. It’s a new game that is introduced by the OICs and we received positive support from the students. The objective of the game is basically to hit the opposite team with the balls and to dodge the incoming balls. This game trains us to be aware of the surroundings as they have to dodge in time. The 2 teams were lacking in strategies as they simply threw the ball at each other randomly. I felt that the purpose of this game is about strategy, planning your next moves so that you can achieve your target easily.

OIC gave instructions during the dodge ball. The students were eager to whack each other with the balls and “attacked” the OIC sometimes.

The Last survivor

As it started to drizzle, we went back to the project room for our very last game: Werewolf and the civilian. This is one of the games that EMRS enjoyed. It was a game of deception. Everyone needs to guess who were the werewolves and debate among us to protect ourselves from getting killed. There was a role of the healer, who can be the angel by healing innocent civilians who got killed or be a selfish devil who keeps on healing themselves. This is the only chance to see who were cunning and selfish.
After all the games, finally everyone get their prizes!! The overall in charge bought several snacks to reward the winning team.

Prizes bought by the OIC!

At the end of the day, everyone enjoyed themselves and we were closer with one another! Games day also serves as a breather for students to relax before embarking on a second journey to Changi City Point. We hope that everybody enjoy themselves as we did, and we thank the students for participating in this event.

CNY Bak Kwa Online Sales

Team 2 was in charge of the Chinese New Year (CNY) online Bak Kwa sales.
Firstly, team 2 was handling an event that they were new to, and are lucky to have the expertise of the DBI students who helped with the online website. Jeyshree, as Official-In-Charge (OIC), was responsible for the entire event and she ensured that the event was smooth. The products that we are selling in this online sale are Bak Kwa from Fragrance at a discounted price. Our online website design was previously done by the previous batch student of EMRS and thanks to the DBI students who edited it with our different Bak Kwa flavours and the different product descriptions. Also, we did up two different posters to be put up on the website and around the school.

Our own poster design by A&P
Team 2 also organized a sampling booth at the shopping arcade from the 29th to 31th of January, targeting students and staff of Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP).  The objective of this booth is to create awareness about the online sales and attract more people to order. We did up our very own signage and decorated our sampling booth with red packets. During the three days of sampling, there were lots of staff and students who came down to try the Bak Kwa samples and most of them placed their orders after they had tried the samples.

Lastly, we also provided free delivery for all NYP Staff and set up a collection booth on the 7th and 8th of February who had ordered Bak Kwa from us.
Here are some pictures about the sampling activities:

Have you seen this around the school canteen?

The event was a success!  We have gained new insights about online sales and contacting suppliers for the booths. The responses received from patrons were overwhelming. We managed to hit our sales target given by the supervisors. Many people expressed interest in our decorations and there were even potential buyers! Thankfully, there were no major problems that happened during event, thus everything went smoothly. We wish you a happy new year and enjoy it with Bak Kwa and goodies that you bought from us!

A Date With Spring (CNY event 2013)

Chinese New Year symbolizes the start of a new beginning for most of our Chinese friends as it marks a new year in the Chinese calendar. Therefore team 3 decided to commemorate this festive season by organising our very own event in school on the 29th January 2013 - 31st January 2013.

As Chinese New Year (CNY) falls on the same week as Valentine's Day, we decided to tie in these two occasions and came up with the theme 'A Date With Spring'. This event was held at the linkway just behind Mcdonald's.

To create the CNY & Valentine's Day atmosphere, we set out to decorate the linkway, covering the notice board panels, the ceiling as well as the pillars.

We have hand-calligraphed Chinese couplets to complement the year of the Snake.
Palm-sized blossom flowers, handmade by our crew, twirled around the pillars.
Detailed paper cut-outs of all 12 Zodiacs with interesting forecasts on Health, Wealth and Love in the year of the snake.

Hanging lanterns and blown up blossom flowers, all hand-made too!

Our very own inspired Chinatown directional stand together with our signage.

We even made our own blossom tree!

A closed-up picture of our event signage, hand-drawn and painted!

Put it all together and you will get...

Don't you just feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside?
Here's our official poster, placed at different locations in school.

We brought in vendors deemed fit to suit our customers' preferences and at the same time able to stick to our theme and bring out the atmosphere we wanted. A must-have on our list was the CNY goodies. What's a CNY event without goodies?

We settled for vendors with pre-prepared products namely New Generation Confectionery and Gobbler Shop.
14 different types of goodies sold, with free sampling too.

From chocolates to snacks to drinks to pantry products, ALL cheap & great deals.

We had SingPost coming in for the first time, selling cool thematic stamps, notepads, laptop sleeves, customized t-shirts and mailbags.

Customized handicrafts were also sold and was popular among students.

Mocol, a regular vendor, selling mobile accessories at affordable prices.

We called in Bag of Bones, a famous blogshop selling female apparels and Marvel t-shirts.
At the same time we had 3 of our retail students selling an assortment of accessories from rings, to bangles to necklaces. You want variety, you get variety!  We even had masks selling like hotcakes especially since they were a dollar each.

Not to mention, we brought in every girl's paradise; Smoochiezz. Beauty products, cosmetics, nail polishes all sold here at affordable prices.

Adding a small personalized touch to the event, we had our very own booth set-up!

It was named, "He Says, She Says". We had sound system installed to liven up the atmosphere of the linkway with both CNY and love songs. Also, some of our team members became emcees as they had a go at the microphone.

What exactly is this booth about?
Well, we offered polaroid photo taking as well as a shoutout platform. We provided an array of props to make photo-taking much more fun. Customers had a choice of two different frames to use.

We also had hearts for sale. Customers may buy  hearts to write down shout outs to those close to heart, quotes or even new year wishes. Their messages would then be pinned up at the booth's notice board throughout the 3 days.

At the end of three days, this was how the notice board looked.

Check out our daily lunch hour crowd!

All in all, the event was a success. The response received from patrons were overwhelming. We managed to hit our sales target given by the supervisors. Many people expressed interest in our decorations and there were even potential buyers! Thankfully, there were no major problems that happened during event, thus everything went smoothly. Good job, EMRS Team 2 and 3 for all your efforts in making this event a success!
