Background & Objectives of the Event

The Back to school event and green fair was organised by the TEP Events Management and Road Show Team 2 to give a warm welcome to our new NYP students and encourage them to fights climate change.

On April 16th , we organised a 'Back to school & Green Fair' event to welcome new and returning students to NYP.This event was held right after our mini roadshow. We had to source for external vendors and suppliers for the first time. We managed to invite 9 vendors namely BGO, SGFreebees, Nestle, Sjora, Book Mark. IT, Fast Fash and lastly 2 yummy food stalls; Ramly burger & Premium Food Delight! For this event, everyone worked really hard,sometimes getting home after 10pm!

The banners gave us the biggest headache as we needed 6 people to get the banners up. And the letters kept went 'missing in action' thanks to the strong wind.

On the first day of the event, we had to drag our feet to school at 7.30am and prepare for the '3 days war'. As our dress code was black and jeans for the day, we were all pespiring so much after the setup due to the heat and the lack of fans at the venue.

We also had our 'Kopi girl&boy' helping Nestle to give the sample of the coffee! The crowd was so good that during day1,we almost ran out of ice, so popular was the iced drinks.

We also had our 'Green Fair' theme for this event. We've got BGO, Book Mark IT and Fast Fash to join us in raising awareness about saving the Earth. BGO is a vendor selling soft toy, clothes that are 100% organic. Fast Fash were selling totebags which send out a message to people to use less plastic bags. And lastly, Book Mark IT sells used books and stationery. To go according to the green theme, we also included a board which shows some fun facts about recycling, how NYP students go green and also a booth to let people jot down on how they could help save the Earth.

On day 3, we had Sjora joining us in our event. Not only did they give out samples of their tasty orange juice, they also had a treasure hunt game which students could win a xBox Kinect. Within 3hours, the lucky student had already found the "hidden treasure" and walked away with the awesome prize!

At the end of the whole event, we certainly enjoyed ourselves and gained more experience. We learnt to 'Expect the unexpected' and strive to improve ourselves for future events. Teamwork was definitely one of the most important factor that led to the success of the event. Thanks to the teachers involved, EMRS Team 1 and the DBI students who made all of this happen.

We managed to achieve our above objectives of having an experience of running the actual event all by our EMRS students, we saw alot of creativity in innovative ideas from our students in the process of making the event and finally we also learnt that teamwork is very essential in an event and even when one person is not aware of what is happening, the event won't go as well as we planned.

mini roadshow 9 April

The mini road show was the first event to be done by the new batch of students of 2012. It was a one day event which was held on the 9th of April. It started from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. There were a total of two teams: Team1 and Team2. And as Team 2, we were given products from MSC, which are stores located in NYP itself. The Overall in charge was Naseera, Logistics in charge was Lucas, A&P in charge was Yvonne and the finance in charge was Mavis. We chose a rainbow theme, in related to the products we were selling such as colorful socks and nail polishes.

It took a while for us to setup the booth; however we were able to set it up in the targeted time by 10:30am. We sent Lucas and Yvonne as our mobile selling team first. However after the first hour of their mobile selling we switched turns and gave everyone the chance.

Since it's our first event, there was quite a lot to learn in a short time frame. There were even unexpected events like moving forward dates, space given was not expected, that’s when, what our lecturer told came to our minds: "expect the unexpected". This first event took us a short journey on how real life situation actually is. Nevertheless, it was a fun experience to do together as a team and we hope to handle more successful events in the near future!

 

 

Customised Study Path (CSP)

Team 3’s last internal event was the Customised Study Path (CSP). This event, which was held on 11^th April 2012, was again handed to EMRS due to previous success and positive feedback received by the teachers. Team 3 did the planning for this event and the all the teams in EMRS assisted to execute it. The objective of this event was to ensure that the entire process of the registering of modules for students was made as seamless as possible.

We had ample time to plan for this event as it was handed out on the first week of EMRS and the actual event only took place on the last week. And with the powerpoint slides, layout and signage used by the previous batch for reference, the whole planning process was also made simpler. 

We took the initiatives to come up with new signage design, the registration lists and manpower allocation. The actual printing and cutting of the signage were done a week before the event to ensure that they will still be in good and new condition. We also went round clearing all the rooms needed for the event a day before to ensure that they are spick-and-span for the actual day. All the manpower was briefed a day before too on their job scope. Also there was a briefing conducted by a lecturer on how to use the software necessary for the registration of modules which was attended by all EMRS students who were tasked to be stationed at the computer labs.

We started off our event day morning with breakfast and by setting up poster stands and signage around SBM to ensure that students who are involved know the exact location to report to. We went around preparing all the necessary rooms needed for the event by screening a slideshow which gave students instructions on how to proceed after each procedure. We deployed our ushers and Lab/Room ICs to their respective locations 45 minutes before the event officially commenced to attend to students who arrived earlier.

Our Room ICs were given queue numbers and registration lists for the diploma they were assigned to. As the number of students expected to turn up for CSP are different in the various diplomas and specializations, some of the rooms were very packed once the event commenced. We managed to complete the event by 4pm, which was one hour earlier than the stipulated time, because of the thorough planning and execution!

Overall, the event was a great success as every student managed to register their modules on time. This also marked the last event executed by the Round 3 EMRS students. We all had fun and the compliments that we received from the lecturers after the event were such morale booster which made us hope that our EMRS journey can continue further.

Mini Roadshow 9 April 2012

EMRS Team 1 was formed and we were tasked to plan and run a mini roadshow selling items from Cheers as our very first event. Jonathan was assigned as the Overall In Charge, Boon Keat as the Logistics In Charge and Leo as our Advertising and Promotion In Charge. We gained much knowledge on the fixtures needed for the booth and were briefed on the financial and administrative matters. We came up with the theme, "POKKA DOTZ", as we planned to use POKKA brand drinks as our main selling item. We ordered more than 200 bottles of POKKA brand flavoured drinks including the popular POKKA Green Tea and Ice Lemon Tea. However, we received only Blueberry Tea, Milk Tea and Milk Coffee drinks at less than half the quantity ordered for each. We faced the challenge with an open mind and decided to make do with all the other stocks we received and continued to set up the mini roadshow with our existing theme.

These are the photographs we took during the pre-roadshow period. We used foam paper to make our nametags and we printed out the letters of POKKA DOTZ and designed it with colourful circles cut from coloured paper for our banner. We displayed the prices of promotional and new items on the posters and used interesting fonts and colours to attract customers.

We set up the booth as a team and made some last minute amendments to our display. We also had colourful circles of different sizes cut up for our customers to write any well wishes for our team and the circles were then placed at the front of our tablecloth, making them part of our display as well. 

Although there was a miscommunication on the cash and stock flow duties, we exceeded the sales target by quite a huge sum as well as our expectations, too. Here are what some of us had to say about the roadshow:

EMRazing Challenge 2012!

EMRazing Challenge 2012 was held on the 4th of April. It is a team bonding event organized by two representatives from Team 3, Sha and Edison. The objectives of this event are to encourage team building, and to simply have fun by utilising the technology made available to us. We also hope to instil a sense of drive when it comes to their projects, through getting each to know each other better.

We have utilised the EMRS project room to organize the first half of the programme. All four teams had to participate in three different games: Don’t Forget Your Lyrics, Are You Smarter Than a Sec 5 Graduate, and Draw Something.

The games started off with Team 3 taking the first turn in playing ‘Don’t Forget Your Lyrics’. The game was separated into 8 different genres ranging from 90s, Indie, Pop, Ballads, Alternative, R&B, Jazz, and Movie Soundtracks. Each team was given two genres to choose from, and only one song out of the two songs in each genre. Team 3 started off with Movie Soundtracks, and picked the song “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” from the movie Armageddon.

After singing a verse in the song, the team then had to guess the missing lyrics towards the end of the verse. Answering this correctly would earn the team 50 points. Getting any part of the lyrics wrong, would take away 25 points from them. The song would then be opened to the floor, for the other teams to solve. Team 3 managed to guess the “missing lyrics” at the end of “I don’t wanna miss a thing,” earning them 50 points. The game then proceeded in a round robin manner.

At the end of the eight rounds, Team 4 emerged as the winner, earning the most points out of the four teams. The game was then taken over by Edison, moving on to the round of the programme, namely, “Are You Smarter Than a Sec 5 Graduate”

This round is based on the TV game show, “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader,” where participants are to answer questions to gain a certain number of points. Each team was offered different categories to choose from such as Singapore, Geography, History, Chemistry and other secondary school subjects.

All the teams were given two categories each, and just like “Don’t Forget Your Lyrics”, winning a turn will earn a team 50 points, and losing a turn will cost them 25 points. Due to the complexity of some questions, Edison had to give a few hints to the floor for the questions to be answered.

This leg of the game went pretty smoothly, with some teams having answered some questions wrong, and most of them getting the questions right. Little do the teams know, the points that they receive will affect the overall game at the end of the day. After 8 rounds of gameplay, Team 4 emerged once again as the winner, taking a lead in the overall EMRazing challenge. The game then proceeded to the last game held in the project room: Draw Something.

Based on the popular iPhone game, “Draw Something” prompts teams to work together and guess what a representative of each team is drawing. The game begins where the representatives from each team come to the whiteboard at the same time. A specific space on the whiteboard would be allocated for each member where they can draw on it. For eight rounds of game play, teams were given only 30 seconds to draw and guess the drawing. The first team to guess the drawing will be given points accordingly. This game came close to a tie, with Team 4 and Team 3 leading the game.

Following this, the games in the EMRS project room are officially over. Team 4 takes the lead with the highest score for the current games. The teams are then given some time to change into the sports attire, and proceed to the Sports Hall at Block F for the final game.

EMRazing got interesting and a buzz of excitement filled the Sports Hall. This was the highlight of the entire event: Captain’s Ball. There were 6 (or more) players in each team. Each team is to select 1 person to be the ‘Captain’ or 'goal catcher' to stand on a chair at the end each play area. The remaining team members will be taking up any position outside of the circle markings around the Captain from the opponent team.

The games went on pretty smoothly with a few small blunders along the way. However, we managed to pull through as two rounds of Captain’s Ball went on simultaneously, and all the teams managed to compete against each other.

After a gruelling and intense 4 rounds of Captain’s Ball, Team 3 emerged as the winner! The teams then proceeded back to the project room for the prize giving presentation.

Even though Team 3 won the Captain’s Ball game, they did not manage to win the overall competition for EMRazing challenge. Team 3 lost to Team 4 by a very small margin due to some points lost in the earlier rounds in the project room. As such, Team 4 emerged as the overall winner!

Overall, the event went very smoothly with only some hiccups hitherto, and we believe the students of EMRS had a lot of fun. Having a half-day team bonding activity not only allows everyone to get to know each other better through fun and games, it also allows all to let their hair down and enjoy themselves. “Work hard, play hard” encourages the students to let loose, and forget about the project submissions for a few hours before working hard again.
